I truly believe that God rewards obedience.

Eph 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

I know there are women out there that have a problem with this verse but that is something that you will have to take up with God. Don't get me wrong, I had huge issues with this verse when I first got married but there were older women in our church that helped me see the light.

I think that the true test of this verse in my life was when my husband wanted to move to Northern New England from Southern California where I was born and raised. You see I have 2 boys from my first marriage and their father was not going to let me take them out of state. So here I was with my first daughter Scarlett only a few months old and my husband determined to leave California. So while the court case was under way (so I could get my boys in the summer) we left. That was the hardest thing I have ever done in my entire life. But the Lord has blessed us with 3 more girls since we moved here. I am so glad that they were all girls because I would never want my boys to feel like they are being replaced. The bottom line to this story is that God knows what you can handle and what is best for you and your family.

I would find it hard to just obey my husband, because who made him know what's best?

Well I suppose that would be God, but still...

Relimom, I agree. But God can't give a man wisdom unless the man asks for it.

Dr. J. Vernon McGee has a wonderful explanation of this text (His audios are at oneplace.com). Every married couple should hear it. He said a more accurate translation of the word submit would have been "respond." When a husband responds to his wife as Jesus responds to us (which is also in that text - love as Jesus loves the church), then a wife will respond in kind. Spouses are partners, not rulers.

Too many Christian wives today are being mistreated because of the misinterpretation of this verse. Emotional well-being in a marriage is important. I'm happy for all the women who have husbands that make this verse easier to "obey." But unfortunately, that's rarely the case.

I agree that this verse has been misinterpreted to allow a controlling man to take over a woman's life more than once. However, if you have a true Biblical marriage...it really isn't so much obeying him as it is trusting that he has your best interest at heart!

The bottom line for me is that if I submit then I am the one obeying the Bible. If he screws up then he is the one that answers at the Bema Judgment Seat.

(Gen 3:16) Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

All of this started back in the Garden of Eden and it will not end until the return to Jesus himself.

Eph 5:24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

I would love nothing more than to babysit my hubby just like my post on the Polar Express. But I try my best to obey the Bible. I don't add or subtract or read between the lines. But it is not for me to start an argument, read it for yourself. But before you read it, pray, and ask the LORD to translate the words for you. Read the entire passages. Also remember that man is fallible and God is not so be very careful as to what mans translation tells you vs. what the Bible says.

When my husband and I got married, he said "follow me, as I follow Christ" If you know that you have married a true man of God then following him is no problem because you are both following Christ, but if he is not then it doesn't work. We both love Jesus.

Always great to hear about a Christian couple making marriage work because they have Christ in their lives.

Thank you for sharing your story. I have suffered for years with not submitting to my husband. He was saved, but he was living to much in the world and I thought I was being GODLY by just submitting to CHRIST and not my husband. What I did not understand was that to submit to my husband, was to submit to CHRIST.
I love GOD and I love my husband, and now I have learned to be obedient in this area. It is wonderful! He and I get along great, and he does not abuse it. If he is loving me like CHRIST loved the CHURCH, then it is easier for me to submit to him. GOD is so wonderful to have healed my home. My husband is now truly walking with the LORD. PRAISE GOD!!

Your sister in CHRIST,
Donna
